Sexually transmitted Infections (STIs)

These are also called Sexually transmitted disease.STIs are usually spread by having vaginal, oral or anal sex. Approx 9 million in the US are diagnosed with an STI each year. Women often have more STI, problems than men.

 


What are a sexually transmitted Infections?
It is an infection which is passed from one person to another person through sexual contact. It is a kind of bacteria, virus or parasites that enter and grows in your body. Some STIs can be cured, and others can not. But there are medicines available to manage symptoms for those STIs that can’t be cured.


How do ST I's affect Women?


Women experience more serious health problems from ST I's than men:
Chlamydia, if left untreated raise the risk of chronic pelvic pain and life- threatening the ectopic pregnancy.
Untreated syphilis in pregnant women results in women death up to 40% of the time.
Women have more risk of getting ST I's infection during unprotected vaginal sex.


What are the signs and symptoms of ST I's?
Many ST I's mainly have mild symptoms or no signs or symptoms at all. When women have symptoms, they may be mistaken for something else like urinary tract Infection, or yeast infection. You have to get it tested properly to treat the correct infection. 




Prevention of ST I's
The best way to prevent an STI is to not to have vaginal, oral or anal sex. But if you do have sex, you can lower your risk of getting an STI by following mentioned tips.
Get vaccinated
Use condoms
Get tested
Be monogamous
Limit your number of sex partners
Do not douche
Do not abuse alcohol or drugs
These steps work at their best when they are used together. No single step can protect you from every kind of STI.
